Yes. Matomo can be configured for full GDPR compliance. With cookieless tracking, IP anonymization, and limited data retention, it is one of the few analytics tools exempt from cookie consent requirements, as confirmed by the French CNIL.
Matomo On-Premise keeps data on your servers within the EU. It includes built-in consent management, data subject request handling (right to access, right to erasure), and configurable data retention.
The main differences are data ownership (Matomo keeps data on your servers, Google sends it to theirs), GDPR compliance (Matomo can work without cookie consent via CNIL-approved cookieless mode), and data accuracy (Matomo processes 100% of traffic without sampling).
Matomo is also open source, allowing custom plugins and full code access. Google Analytics is free but monetizes your visitors’ data for advertising.
